The basic purpose of BBA(Hons) degree is to gain a full knowledge of main disciplines relevant to business management. In this program the students are provided a strong foundation in the basic fields and are also exposed to the latest issues and topics facing business leaders today. BBA (Hons) is a 4 year bechalor degree, Generally BBA (Hons) is not a terminal degree and most of the students would go for their MBA before getting into the job market. However, the program is designed in such a way that graduates should be capable of getting reasonable jobs in the market and also in multinational Farms.

Degree Requirements

The BBA programme requires students to complete 120 Modular Credits (MCs) to graduate. After completing at least 56 MCs of Business Foundation/Essential/Elective modules, students with Cumulative Average Point (CAP) of at least 3.5 (out of 5.0) will be invited to join the BBA Honours BBA(Hons) or BBA(Acc) programme, which requires 160 modular credits for graduation (40 more than for the BBA programme).

When registering for modules, students must note any prerequisites that indicate the base of knowledge on which the subject matter of a particular module will be built. Before taking a module, a student should complete any prerequisite module(s) listed for that particular module. Where prerequisites are specified, equivalent modules will also be accepted. If in doubt, students should consult the course instructor or academic advisors regarding any acceptable equivalent prerequisite modules.

The degree requirements for 3-year BBA program and the 4-year BBA Honours program are listed in Tables 1 and 2 below. These requirements follow the NUS undergraduate curriculum structure having the following outline:

International English Language Test System: IELTS

International English Language Test System famously known as IELTS is an English Language Proficiency test that is required to be taken by non-native students for study in countries where the medium of instruction is English. Among the popular study destinations IELTS is accepted by universities in UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

The test is conducted by the British Council. You can contact your local British Council office to find out where your nearest test centre is located. Most centres normally have a testing session about once a month. You should contact the test centre to find out the date of the next test and collect the IELTS handbook and an application form. The filled application form should be sent back to the test centre with the test fee. You will be given a date and time of your test.

The British Council also runs short courses to prepare you for IELTS. Check details about the same from your test centre.

IELTS is jointly managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, British Council, and IDP: IELTS Australia.

It has become a mandatory test for students of many nationalities to get student visas to Australia. You cannot be granted an Australian student visa without an IELTS score if you are from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and any other countries like these, TOEFL is not accepted.

All other study destinations either require you to take the TOEFL or IELTS. IELTS is however not accepted by most universities in USA. TOEFL is required for study there.

The test results are normally made available within two weeks of taking the test. You can also ask for more copies of your test results.

The test has follwing sections:

The Listening Section - Duration : 30 minutes

Academic reading/general training reading section - Duration : 60 minutes

Academic writing/general training writing section - Duration : 60 minutes
Speaking Section : Duration : 11 - 14 minutes

Total test time : 2 hours and 45 minutes

You will receive a separate Band Score. The four Band Scores, one for each section are added together and averaged for an Overall Band Score. Each Band has a statement giving a summary of the English at that level. There are nine Band levels, from one (non-user) to nine (expert user).

The minimum score accepted for a course ranges from 5.0 to 7.5, depending upon courses and institutes you are applying to. The most common requirement is a band score of 6 to 6.5.

Test Reports have a validity of two years.You can retake the test if you donot achieve the desired score but not before three months of the first test date.

What the GMAT Measures?

Multiple-choice tests are one of the most common testing formats for classroom tests, competency tests and for entrance exams to college. Learning a few strategies for taking multiple-choice tests can go along way towards helping you do well in school and preparing for both college and a career.

The following are the two most common types of questions you’ll find on a multiple-choice test.

Question Format #1 – Fill in the blank.

A fill in the blank question is usually formatted as an incomplete statement where you are required to fill in the blank to complete the statement. When given this type of question you are usually provided with four answer choices. You are then required to selection the choice that best completes the statement.

The following is an example:

The 13th amendment to the U.S. Constitution is addresses .

a. The right to bare arms
b. Freedom of speech
c. Abolition of slavery
d. Right to an attorney

The correct answer is “c”. In this example you would circle the letter “c” to complete the statement “The 13th amendment to the U.S. Constitution addresses abolition of slavery.

Question Format #2 – Select the correct answer.

This format for multiple-choice questions is straightforward. You are presented with a direct question and several possible answers. You are then expected to select the letter that represents the answer choice that correctly answers the question.

The following is an example:

How many counties are there in the state of Utah?

a. 17
b. 15
c. 29
d. 22

You should circle “c” to show that there are 20 counties in the state of Utah.

Helpful Hints for Taking Multiple-Choice Tests

1. Carefully read the statement to be completed or question to be answered. Then underline, highlight or circle the most important words in the statement or question to help you focus on the information that is most important.

2. Even if you think you know the answer make sure to read all of the answer choices before circling one.

3. Cross off any answer choices that you know are incorrect. This will help you narrow down the selection of choices and focus only on those answers that may be correct.

4. Look for answer choices that are opposites. More often than not when two answer choices are opposite one is likely to be the correct answer.

3. Persuasion

Persuasive writing is most commonly found in editorials, newspapers, magazines and political publications.

4. Exposition

The purpose of exposition is to inform, explain, expound or clarify the writer’s ideas and thoughts. While similar to descriptive writing, exposition provides the reader greater detail and depth of understanding about the writer’s thoughts and ideas. Expositions are most commonly found in newspapers, magazines and books.

5. Comparison and Contrast

The purpose of the writing technique is to show the reader the similarities and differences about a something. Comparison is used to show or explain how what is alike or common. Contract is used to show what is different. When asked to compare and contrast the Civil War with World War II the writer would show the similarities and differences between these two wars.

* Write down your assignments, assignment due dates and your test dates.

Remember information is essential to you ability to excel in school and later in life. If you are unable to remember what you’ve learned then you won’t be able perform well on tests and you will be unable to apply what you’ve learned in the real world. Remembering information is essential to your success.

This section addresses the Acronym strategy for remembering information. Acronyms have proven to be an effective strategy for remembering information. What is an acronym? An acronym is a word that is formed from the first letter of each category of information to be remembered. An acronym can be real or made up, just as long as you can pronounce it. For example, a very popular acronym most of you have heard of is MADD. MADD stands for Mothers Against Drunk Drivers.

So how do you form and acronym? To form an acronym, simply follow the steps below.

Step 1 - Write down the fact or information you want to remember.

Step 2 - Underline the first let of each fact. Or underline the first let of the word the best represents the information you are trying to remember.

Step 3 - Arrange the underline letters sequentially to form an acronym. Again, the acronym can be real or made up just as long as you can pronounce it.

Using the acronym strategy is an effective way for remembering information. It is especially useful for remember events, concepts and information for essay tests.

A very effective way of preparing for class discussions and test is by using a study group. A study group can provide a lot of benefits over studying alone. However, there are some potential pitfalls you’ll want to avoid if you decide to form a study group. The following are the benefits, characteristics and pitfalls of study groups.

Benefits of a Study Group

* A study group can provide emotional support and motivation when your enthusiasm for the subject is slipping. Often working together as team in and of itself is motivating.

* You can rely on the knowledge of the other study group participants to answer difficult questions you were afraid to ask in class.

* The cumulative knowledge of the group is likely to be much greater than the knowledge of any individual group member. Consequently, as a group you are able to help each other better understand difficult concepts and you can learn from the knowledge of the other members.

* For auditory learners study groups are especially beneficial because you listen to the group discuss information and concepts.

* If you know that your study group is relying on you you’re likely to prepare yourself well for your study sessions so that you don’t let the other group members down.

* Study groups are useful because they provide you the opportunity to compare your notes with those of the other members in the group. This will help you develop more complete notes.

* Participating in a study group provides you the opportunity to teach and explain information and concepts to the other group members. Teaching others is an excellent way to reinforce the information and concepts in your own mind.

* Studying in groups is fun. This makes preparing for a test or class discussion enjoyable.

Putting Together An Effective Study Group

* First, you need to realize that study groups don’t just happen. Also, know that getting together with your best friends isn’t the best way for forming an effective study group.

* You should select classmates for your study group that are:
- Motivated
- Knowledgeable
- Open to other people’s ideas
- Dependable
- That you get along with
* Typically a study group should consist of three to five people. Having less than three people in a study group makes the group less effective. Including more than five people in study group makes it difficult to manage responsibilities within the group, may lead to some individuals avoiding responsibility and can cause cliques to form. Again, as a rule of thumb an effective study group should have three to five members.

* An effective study group usually meets together three times a week for an hour to an hour and a half.

* You should select a designated location for your study group to meet. This location should be free of any distractions. Libraries are great places to have study groups, as well as empty classrooms. Conducting study groups at group members’ homes is usually less effective since there are usually many distractions.

* A study group should have direction and purpose. As a group you should set short and long-term goals and decided how you are going to accomplish those goals.

* While a study group doesn’t need a leader it is helpful to have a specified leader for each study session. The study session leader is responsible for keeping the study session on topic and making sure that the study session goals are accomplished before the study session ends.

* Put together a group member roster. This will include the name, telephone number and email address for each group member. After the roster is complete make sure that each individual in the group is given a copy.

Attributes of A Successful Study Group

* Each group member needs to actively listen when another group member is speaking. Group members should not interrupt or speak while another group member is speaking. An effective way for ensuring that every group member can participate is for the group session leader to select individuals to speak when they raise their hand.

* In a successful study group every member participates and contributes.

* Study group members should work together to resolve group concerns or issues.

* Group members arrive on time to study group sessions.

* Group members show up to study sessions well prepared.

* The study group doesn’t stray from the study session agenda.

* The study group accomplished the goals of each study session.

* Group members are respectful of one another and are open to the ideas of the other group members.

* Group members can accept constructive criticism.

* At the end of each study session a list of responsibilities is prepare. This list will include the responsibility of each group member for the next study session.

Common Pitfalls of a Study Group

As we mentioned previously, a study group can be a very useful and effective way to study, learn new concepts and prepare for exams. However, study groups can also be very ineffective if not managed correctly.

* Make sure to stay focused on the goals of your study session. Do not spend time talking about unrelated subjects.

* Make sure the study group stays positive. Don’t focus on how hard your class is or how much you dislike your teacher.

* All group members must come prepared. Make sure any group member that arrives unprepared to study session understands that they must come prepared to every study session.

* Do not allow one or two group members to dominate group discussion. All group members should participate equally.

Taking Notes in Class

Learning how to take good notes in class is an important part of study preparation. The information provided and topics covered by your teacher are what you will be studying. If you don’t take good notes in class you won’t know what to study once class is over.

There are three step the must be completed in order to take good notes in class.

1. Prepare to Take Note Before Class Begins

Before coming to class you should review your notes from the previous class. Since your teacher will build on your notes from the previous class period it is important that review these notes so that you can understand the new concepts being taught. Also, make sure to bring plenty of pens, pencils and paper for taking notes.

2. Take Effective Notes During Class

Make sure to stay focused. Paying attention to what your teacher is saying is essential to taking good notes in class. You want to include all the important information in your notes but you don’t want to write down every sing word. If you try to write down everything your teacher says you’re sure to miss important concepts. Listen for “signal statements” such as “The most important point…”, “Don’t forget that…”, “Remember that…”, or “The test will include…”. When you hear these statements you’ll know that to start writing. Also, make sure to write down anything your teacher writes on the chalkboard or repeats several times. Make sure to write quickly so that you can cover all the important topics in your notes. You may also consider abbreviating certain words in order to save time. For example, instead of percent use the % sign. Instead of writing Unite States write U.S.

If you get behind or don’t understand a concept make a mark on your paper to remind you to come back and review the subject in more detail but keep taking notes and keep up with the pace of your teacher.

3. After Class Over Rewrite Your Notes

Rewriting your notes after each a class is the final step to taking effective notes. Rewriting your notes will give you the opportunity review concepts the were difficult to understand while they’re still fresh in your mind, change abbreviated works into complete words, and answer questions you had during class.

Learning Styles

There are three common learning styles, Visual Learning Style (the most common), Auditory Learning Style and Tactile (Kinesthetic) Learning Style. Identifying the learning style that best suits you is an important part of developing effective studying.

Visual Learning Style

Individuals that learn best when ideas or subjects are presented in a visual format, whether that is written language, pictures, diagrams or videos are visual learners. Visual learners usually learn best when the teacher provides written study notes, writes on the chalkboard and uses an overhead projector to explain concepts. Visual learners frequently take detailed notes in class, when studying from a textbook or listening to lectures. They also create diagrams and use pictures to understand and remember concepts and ideas. If this sounds like you then you are probably a visual learner – many people are.

Auditory Learning Style

If you learn best by participating in class discussion, by listening to your teacher lecture, listening to audio tapes or by listening to other language formats then you are probably an Auditory Learner. Auditory Learners, unlike Visual Learners, are able to learn, understand and retain information better when they hear it rather than see it.

Tactile Learning Style

Tactile Learners, also commonly referred to as Kinesthetic Learners, are hand-on learners. They learn best when they are able to physically participate directly in what they are required to learn or understand. Tactile learners usually excel when they are able to handle something in order to learn about it. Tactile learners may do especially well in classes where lab work is required. Unlike Visual Learners that learn by seeing and Auditory Learners that learn by hearing, Tactile Learners learn by touching and feeling.

So why is identifying and understanding your learning style so critical to your study preparation? By knowing how you learn best you can select those classes, teachers, subjects, majors and ultimate careers that appeal to your unique way of learning things.

A Strategy for Reading Textbooks

Ever heard of SQRW? Well it might sound sort of complex but its actually quite simple and straight forward. SQRW is a four-step strategy for reading and taking notes from textbooks that will help you better prepare for exams, better prepare for class discussion, improve your reading comprehension and help you learn better using textbooks. SQRW stands for Survey, Question, Read and Write.

Survey

The first step in the SQRW reading strategy is Survey. Before you actually start reading a chapter you first survey the chapter. You read the chapter title, introduction, headings and the summary or conclusion at the end of the chapter. When you survey you should also review any pictures, graphs, maps, or tables in the chapter and the caption (text explanation that goes with each). The purpose of surveying the chapter is to quickly learn what the chapter is about before reading it in its entirety.

Question

The second step in the SQRW reading strategy is to ask questions as your read. Questions help you to focus and give your reading purpose. Instead of simply reading without purpose now you are searching for useful, applicable information. Use each chapter heading to develop questions for that chapter. For example, for chapter titled “Housing Training Dogs” you might develop the question “How many ways are there to house train a dog?” or “What is involved in house training a dog?” If a chapter heading contains several ideas you may want to form a question for each idea. Always remember to use the chapter headings to develop questions – don’t use the conclusion, summary, introduction or the text to develop your questions.

Read

The R in the SQRW stands for Read and represents the third step in the SQRW reading strategy. Once you’ve surveyed the chapter and developed questions based on the chapter titles you should then read the information contained in the chapter to answer the questions you developed. As you read the chapter in an attempt to answer the questions you developed you may find it necessary to modify your question(s) or you may think of more questions that need to be answered. Make sure to focus as you read and take time to thoroughly answer each question you develop.

Write

The final step in the SQRW reading strategy for reading textbooks is Write. Make sure to write each of the questions you form along with its answer in a notebook. After you’ve written down each question as well as the answer to each question review each question again to make sure you have completely answered the question.

As you begin to apply the SQRW strategy you’ll find that learning will become easier, you’ll develop better notes to prepare for class discussion and exams, and ultimately you’ll learn much more.
